Haida Raven Remake by ARTificialphanTOM Haida Raven Remake by ARTificialphanTOM
Created using acrylics on standard canvas.

One of my favorite artists is  Bill Reid. His Haida paintings and carvings are beyond compare. This is a remake of his painting called Haida Raven. In the Raven painting he uses the standard red and black colors but in other Haida paintings they sometimes also include blue. I prefer the three color scheme, so I redid his painting using the three colors and modified the interior figures in the wings and the belly. These are not traditional Haida forms but I wanted to show a representation of the Haida story where the raven steals the sun from out of a box of a godlike chief to place into the sky. The picture is a little dark but that is a yellow dot in the mouth of the interior figure. Yellow is not a color used in Haida artwork normally. I can't take credit for the overall design which is all Bill Reids creation but I like the way my modifications turned out and I take great pride having this hanging on my wall at home. I like Your changes,it is more clear...
The bird inside is much more nice with pointy beak, and yellow add warmth that asociate the image with something personal...
The original one is more like some stamp, this is a picture...
Well done!

Great interpretation of the original. :) I like how you incorporated the story of the sun into the design, and it works well as the central point. The linework's nice and clean; almost looks digital as someone else mentioned, but there's just enough variation in the blue and red to still have that traditional art quality.

Bill Reid's probably one of my favourite First Nations artists; whenever I see the Spirit of Haida Gwaii sculpture in Vancouver airport I know I'm home. I was lucky enough to study NW Coast drawing with an artist who's part of an apprenticeship lineage stemming from Reid (he taught Robert Davidson, who taught Freda Diesing, who taught Henry Green, who taught my instructor Luke Parnell.)

Our natural history museum (Field Museum) has a fair amount of Haida/Tlingit art and I have been in love with it since I was a kid. Bill Reid and Robert Davidson are two of my favorites. That is so awesome that you got some passed down instruction from these great artists. Although I have never been to Vancouver I know the sculpture and it is a wonderful piece. Thanks or the positive feedback.

I really do like the addition of blue in your painting it gives it something more for the eyes to focus on. Your placement of the colors complements the original artists work quite lovingly.

Thanks. I painted with as much precision as I could. Shrinking the picture down also makes it look cleaner.

Thanks. It took a little patience but I really like Haida art so just slowly worked away at it over a month.

It looks like parts of cars being attached in different spots. My eyes find this intriguing. I can't make out what the actual thing is, but that's good.

Amazing, so this is a remake? Looks very tribal, I love that style a lot, you should try to dabble in that style more.

Thanks. Did this with a paint brush so it took quite awhile. I am a big fan of Haida art so I figured I needed one for my wall. I'm sure you will make something awesome with Illustrator.
